“Shan.”

“No.”

“Shan.”

“I can see it.”

“What is that?”

“Rhea.”

“What. Is. That.”

A large silver watch sat beside a bottle of aftershave.

Diamond bezel.

Blue face.

Ridiculous.

Keys had bought it the year before after getting a payout from some music deal Rhea still did not fully understand. He had posted it for three straight days with captions about generational wealth, while Rhea had called it a disco ball for wrists.

He loved that watch.

He wore it everywhere.

And now it was sitting behind Tia.

Rhea stood so quickly that the takeaway box slid from the bed and hit the carpet.

Shan jumped.

“Oh God.”

“Don’t call God into this. He has enough problems.”

“Rhea, sit down.”

“That’s his watch.”

“It could be anybody’s.”

“Who else owns that ugly fucking thing?”

“Lots of men.”

“Name three.”

“I don’t know three men with watches!”

“Exactly.”

Rhea walked towards her wardrobe and pulled open both doors.

Shan watched her.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re choosing an outfit.”

“I’m putting clothes on.”

“You’re already wearing clothes.”

“This is a robe.”

“You’re in your house.”

Rhea pulled out a pair of black leggings.

“I want to be comfortable.”

“For what?”

“Life.”

“Rhea.”

“What?”

“Where are you going?”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

She stepped into the leggings.

Shan stared.

“You are dressing like somebody preparing to travel.”

“I was cold.”

“You have central heating.”

“Cost of living.”

“Rhea.”

“I said I’m not going anywhere!”

The Live was still running on her main phone.

Seven thousand people were now watching Rhea change from a satin robe into leggings and a fitted black bodysuit while insisting she had absolutely no intention of leaving the house.

The comments had become a Greek chorus.

SHE GETTING DRESSED LOOOOOL

RHEA STAY HOME

PUT TRAINERS ON GIRL

TIA BETTER LOCK HER DOOR

CALL SHAN MUM

THIS BETTER THAN NETFLIX

Rhea read the last one.

“Exactly, and Netflix charge you lot. I give you entertainment for free.”

Shan pointed at her.

“That is your problem.”

“What?”

“You think because people are watching, you have to perform.”

Rhea stopped for half a second, then reached for a sweatshirt.

“I’m not performing.”

“You are.”

“I’m angry.”

“You can be angry offline.”

“Why?”

Shan blinked.

Rhea pulled the sweatshirt over her head.

“Seriously. Why? Everybody else gets to talk about me online. Tia gets to go Live with that man’s belongings sitting behind her like some fucking Easter egg hunt. People send me things, people tag me, people make reaction videos and people make money off my name, then when I respond, suddenly I’m the problem?”

Shan did not answer.

Because that part was harder.

Rhea grabbed her wig from its stand.

“Where are my lashes?”

“Rhea.”

“My lashes.”

“You don’t need lashes to fight.”

Rhea turned.

“Who said I’m fighting?”

“You’ve put on leggings.”

“So?”

“The violence trousers.”

“These are Gymshark.”

“Exactly.”

Rhea found her lashes.

Her hands were shaking.

She hated that.

Anger was fine.

Humiliation was different.

Humiliation lodged itself somewhere between her ribs and made everything feel hot.

She applied glue to the lash strip, missed slightly, swore, then tried again.

Her Live had reached ten thousand viewers.

Keys called back.

Rhea stared at his name and let it ring.

He called again.

The comments screamed.

ANSWER HIM

PUT HIM ON SPEAKER

KEYS PANICKING

Rhea answered.

“What?”

“Why did you hang up?”

“Why is your watch at Tia’s house?”

Silence.
