By the time Rhea reached the Range Rover, twelve thousand people were watching.

Rain spotted the bonnet while South London gleamed beneath orange streetlights, cars hissing over wet roads as somebody nearby played dancehall loudly enough for the bass to vibrate through the pavement.

Shan climbed into the passenger seat.

Rhea mounted her phone against the dashboard.

“You are not driving Live.”

“I’m not looking at it.”

“You’ve positioned it directly in front of your face.”

“For safety.”

“For engagement.”

Rhea started the engine.

Her phone rang.

Mum.

Rhea looked at Shan.

“You called her?”

“No.”

“Then who told her?”

Both sisters looked at the Live.

Thousands of usernames flew past.

Shan sighed.

“The internet.”

Rhea declined the call.

Mum called again.

Rhea declined it.

Again.

Declined.

Then a voice note came through.

Shan pressed play before Rhea could stop her.

Their mother’s voice filled the car.

“RHEA. TURN YOUR CAR AROUND. I DON’T KNOW WHAT FOOLISHNESS YOU ARE DOING TONIGHT, BUT SHANICE BETTER NOT FOLLOW YOU INTO IT. AND IF YOU HAVE THAT PHONE ON LIVE, TELL THEM PEOPLE GOODNIGHT AND GO TO YOUR BED.”

Rhea stared at the road while the comments went insane.

MUM HAS SPOKEN

AUNTIE SAID GO BED

TURN AROUND RHEA

SHANICE BETTER NOT FOLLOW LOOOOOL

Rhea muttered, “Why does she always call me Rhea like she didn’t name me that?”

Shan burst out laughing.

Rhea fought it for a few seconds, then laughed too.

For about eight seconds, the pressure cracked.

Then the notification appeared.

Tia Morgan mentioned you in her Live.

Rhea’s smile disappeared.

“What did she say?”

Shan took her phone.

“I’m not telling you.”

“Shan.”

“No.”

“Tell me.”

“You’re driving.”

“Then read it.”

“I’m not feeding you.”

Rhea indicated left.

“Fine.”

Thirty seconds passed.

Shan made the mistake of inhaling sharply.

Rhea’s eyes flicked towards her.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“What did she say?”

“Drive.”

“What did she say?”

Shan stared at the screen.

“Tia said if certain women spent less time monitoring men they weren’t with anymore, they might have time to heal.”

The car went silent.

Rhea’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

“Say it again.”

“No.”

“Say it.”

“You heard me.”

Rhea nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

Shan groaned.

“That ‘okay’ is worse than shouting.”

“I’m calm.”

“You are never calm when you announce calmness.”

“I said I’m calm.”

“Your indicator has been on for three streets.”

Rhea clicked it off.

Five seconds later, she muttered:

“Monitoring men I’m not with.”

“Rhea.”

“She was sitting in my kitchen eating curry goat three Christmases ago.”

“I know.”

“My mother bought that bitch pyjamas.”

“I know.”

“My daughter called her Auntie T.”

“I know.”

“I paid for her birthday trip.”

“I know.”

“She cried in my bed when Callum cheated on her.”

“I know.”

“And now she’s wearing Keys’s shirt.”

“We don’t know it’s his shirt.”

“That man buys every white shirt from the same place.”

“That is not evidence.”

“His watch is there.”

“That is closer to evidence.”

“She knows exactly what she’s doing.”

“Probably.”

Rhea glanced at Shan.

“Probably?”

Shan sighed.

“Yes. Probably. She knows you’ll react.”

The words sat between them.

Rhea turned the music down.

“What?”

“She knows you’ll react.”
