One Comment. One Babyfather. One Very Bad Night. 😭👀

Rhea had been online for forty-three minutes before the comment appeared, forty-three full minutes of telling women to stop watching her harder than they watched their own children, insisting she did not care what anybody thought about her and checking the viewer count every twelve seconds.

She was sitting cross-legged at the end of her bed in a black satin robe, her bonnet pushed halfway back from her forehead, one AirPod in her ear and the other missing somewhere inside the folds of the duvet. A takeaway box of jerk chicken and chips sat open beside her, abandoned after three bites because somebody called NayNay4Real had entered the Live and typed:

WHY U ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE THEN SAY U DONT LIKE DRAMA

Rhea had spent the next fourteen minutes answering a question she claimed did not deserve an answer.

“Because I don’t like drama,” she said, lifting one perfectly shaped eyebrow at the camera. “There’s a difference between drama and responding. If you come for me, obviously I’m going to respond. What do you expect me to do, sit here and suck my thumb?”

The comments rolled faster.

BUT U BEEN TALKING BOUT TIA ALL WEEK

SHE NEVER EVEN SAID UR NAME

RHEA U KNOW U LOVE IT

SHOW US THE RECEIPTS THEN

Rhea laughed, though anybody who had followed her longer than six months knew it was not her real laugh.

Her proper laugh came from somewhere deep in her stomach, loud, ugly and uncontrollable, usually with her shoulders shaking and sometimes ending in the little snort she denied every time somebody clipped it.

This one was different.

One sharp breath through the nose.

A smile with no teeth.

Then:

“Anyway.”

Her sister Shan, who had been sitting quietly in the small velvet chair near the window eating salt-and-vinegar crisps, looked up from the packet.

“Come off the Live.”

Rhea ignored her.

“Because people keep bringing up Tia, and I’ve said from the beginning that I wish that girl nothing but the best. I don’t have any issue with her. None. Zero. Zilch.”

Shan stopped chewing.

“You called her a parasitic goblin yesterday.”

“That wasn’t about her.”

“You said her name.”

“I know bare Tias.”

“You said Tia Morgan.”

Rhea turned slightly away from the camera.

“Shan, are you with me or against me?”

“I’m with peace.”

“Then go church.”

The comments exploded.

LOOOOOOOOOOL

NOT GO CHURCH

SHAN TIRED OF HER

FREE SHAN

Rhea looked at the screen.

“Free who? She came here voluntarily.”

“I came because Mum told me you sounded manic.”

Rhea’s head whipped around.

“You see why I don’t tell Mum anything?”

“You posted seventeen Stories before breakfast.”

“That’s called content.”

“At six in the morning?”

“My followers are international.”

“Your followers are nosy.”

“They can be both.”

Shan reached into the packet for another crisp while Rhea turned back towards the camera.

“And this is exactly why I don’t have people in my house while I’m online, because everybody suddenly thinks they’re part of the production.”

Then the comment appeared.

And beneath it:

ASK KEYS WHY HE WAS AT TIA HOUSE LAST NIGHT.

Rhea stopped.

Not dramatically, which somehow made it worse. She simply stopped moving, her eyes passing over the comment once and then returning to it as if her brain needed to make sure the words still said the same thing.

Behind her, Shan noticed the silence and looked up.

The comments did not stop.

OOP

DELETE THAT

WHO IS LUSHLIFE

WAIT WHAT

TIA????

HER TIA???

RHEA DONT DO IT

CALL HIM

Rhea leaned closer to the phone.

“Who said that?”

Shan stood.

“Rhea.”

“No, because who said that?”

“Leave it.”

“I am leaving it.”

Rhea picked up her second phone.

Shan closed her eyes.

“Why are you calling him then?”

“Because I’m leaving it properly.”

“Rhea.”

“It could be a lie.”

“So let it be a lie.”

“Exactly, so I’ll ask him.”

“That is not leaving it.”

“It is closure.”

“You don’t need closure from something that happened twenty seconds ago.”

Rhea was already scrolling through her contacts.

Keys was saved as:

DO NOT ANSWER

She stared at the name for half a second.

Then pressed call...
