She came from pain—but she did not belong to it.

Born in post-Emancipation Jamaica on land heavy with history, Maud Langley was raised by a mother marked by violence and a father forged by resistance. From early on, she knew girls like her weren’t meant to dream big—but Maud did.

Leaving her rural village to become a midwife, Maud defied expectations and chose purpose over silence. Her path led her from the hills of St. James to the hospitals of Kingston and, eventually, to England on the Empire Windrush.

Roots of Gold – A Jamaican Daughter of The Empire Windrush is the powerful prequel to Roots of Gold, tracing Maud’s bold journey across continents, carving legacy from hardship, and honouring the fire of Black womanhood.
